[devblog] Pixel Tennis - Gameplay basics 2 (video)

Post by WongKit » Tue Feb 20, 2018 7:57 pm

Hi there,

I am glad to announce, that I can post a new video about Pixel Tennis' gameplay mechanics.

This video demonstrates additional gameplay elements that were implemented recently. Like in part 1, the main focus lies on gameplay and game mechanics. Pixel Tennis visual appearance will definetely change in the future.

Everything shown here was made under the topic "gameplay first".

Feel free to comment on everything you notice in the video.

I will just copy paste what i wrote under the yt video:
"Nice progress :) Only thing i want to say here is that in FT, long slices were smash-able when hitting them at a certain time in the air (like in real life tennis). Otherwise special shots was nice and yeah maybe after every point a banner shall appear in the middle of the screen which shows the score. I dont want to nitpick at that since its your original project :)
I am happy and very excited to see how it continues to turn out. Good job and good luck."

PS: Since its for now gameplay basics. I think you already nearly captured all moves there is.

Thanks! This was a fast reply

The long slice should actually be high enough to be smashable. Have not tested it in multiplayer though.

About the banner thing - yes, it is missing (or any kind of visual indicator that a team scored). This and also other graphical / animation stuff will come later. The current special shot effect, for example, is only there to test the engines particle system and its performance impact.

You are right, the gameplay basics regading court play is mostly completed apart from parameter tuning and balancing.

awesome ! love to see the quick progress youre making with the basic game mechanics, pretty much all of the shots look perfect, little things like speed of the ball from certain "specialshots" need some adjustment i guess but thats easily done. one more thing - is the normal slice not a little bit tooo long ? i remember it going even less far in FT if iam not wrong :) ... other than that its perfect - like all the stuff you did so far!

  • Hello wongkit,

I just read all the forum and i'm so impressed by your work. I'm hyped to see the futur news.

you said in an other post that you won't make any "pay-to-win" things like gacha coins. I agree for it, but I wonder how will you win the money you deserve ? (maybe donations ?)

I can't really give money atm, but I'll talk about your game and I hope everything will work for you.

I wish you a really good luck and courage.

(I hope I could play to the "pre-alpha" game :D)

Thanks all for your input!

@Tsukoyomi: Yes, the slice went a bit too far. This is already changed. Ball speeds etc. are still a thing that need to be balanced later.

@MrJivoirien: I'm not sure, if it does sound stupid, but I do not plan to use Pixel Tennis to earn money. I am glad that people are actually interested about this project. Btw, there is already a donation button somewhere at pixeltennis.de, never promoted it though.

If developing/maintaining the game forces me to invest bigger amounts of money by myself, I most likely would try to get at least these costs covered.
